SweethomeeIn most Indian homes, guests don't come one at a time. A wedding or a festival brings five or ten people, and suddenly you're spreading gaddas on the floor and borrowing blankets from the neighbours. We keep getting the same call at the shop: "how much extra bedding should I buy?" Here's the simple answer, with what to buy and how to store it.
What each guest needs
For every guest sleeping over, plan this much:
| Item | Per guest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single bedsheet | 1, plus 1 spare for every 2 guests | For a single bed, a mattress on the floor or a diwan |
| Pillow + pillow cover | 1 | Many guests forget theirs |
| Blanket or comforter (winter) | 1 | North Indian winter nights get cold |
| Towel | 1 | Saves a lot of asking |
Bedsheets: single packs work best
Guests usually sleep on a single bed, a floor mattress or a diwan, so single bedsheets go further than king sheets. Our Checkmate pack of 2 has two 60×90 inch single bedsheets with 17×27 inch pillow covers, in heavy glace cotton with a cotton-like feel.
If the guest room has a double bed, a queen or king set is better. The bedsheet size guide tells you which one fits.
Winter: blanket or comforter?
- Light polar fleece blanket: 60×90 inches (152×228 cm), brushed on both sides, anti-pilling and wrinkle-free. Folds small, so it is easy to store and good for travel and AC rooms too.
- Flowa single comforter: supersoft glace cotton with fibre filling, 60×90 inches. A comfortable layer for a single bed.
- Warm flannel king bedding set: 1 bedsheet, 2 pillow covers and 2 handmade round cushions, for the guest room bed.
Still deciding? Read comforter vs blanket.
Pillows
Keep at least one extra pillow per guest. Our virgin microfibre sleeping pillows come in 15×25, 16×26, 17×27 and 18×28 inches. 17×27 matches most standard pillow covers, including the ones in our single packs. More in the pillow and bolster size guide.
Day time: where everyone sits
With a full house, the diwan and the floor become seating. A matching diwan set with bolster and cushion covers turns the diwan into a proper sitting area, and a carpet on the floor makes room for the kids to sit and play.
Storing guest bedding
- Wash and dry everything fully in the sun before storing. Damp bedding smells when you open it next time.
- Fold each set together: bedsheet, pillow cover and blanket in one bundle, so you can hand it over in one go.
- Use cloth bags or old pillow covers instead of plastic, so the fabric can breathe.
- Before the guests arrive, air everything out in the sun for a few hours.

Frequently asked questions
How much extra bedding should I keep for guests?
Per guest: one single bedsheet, one pillow with cover, one blanket or comforter in winter and one towel. Add one spare bedsheet for every two guests.
Which bedsheet size is best for guests?
Single bedsheets (60×90 inch) work best because guests usually sleep on a single bed, a floor mattress or a diwan. For a double bed in the guest room, use queen or king.

A light polar fleece blanket is good for cool nights and AC rooms. For colder nights, add a comforter or use the blanket over one.
What pillow size matches a standard pillow cover?
17×27 inches suits most standard pillow covers, including the covers in our single bedsheet packs.
