Bedsheet size guide: which size actually fits your bed?
Queen or king, fitted or flat, 8 inch or 12 inch mattress. How to pick without returning it.

SweethomeeMost of the return requests we get for bedsheets are not about colour or print. They are about size. Somebody orders a queen sheet for a king bed, or a fitted sheet for a mattress that is two inches too thick, and the corners keep popping off. So before you look at prints, spend two minutes with a measuring tape. This guide is what we tell customers on WhatsApp every day.
The quick answer
For a standard Indian double bed (about 60×75 inches), a queen size flat bedsheet of 90×100 inches is enough. For a king bed (about 72×78 inches), take a king size sheet of 108×108 inches so it hangs properly on both sides.
If you want the sheet to stay tight and never need re-tucking, go for a fitted bedsheet and match it to your mattress thickness.

How to measure your mattress
Measure the mattress, not the bed frame. You need three numbers:
- Length: head side to foot side
- Width: left to right
- Depth: the thickness, from the bottom edge to the top surface
For a flat sheet, add roughly 2 × depth + 10 inches to the width and length. That extra is what tucks under. A 6 inch mattress on a 60×75 bed needs about 82×97 inches, which is why 90×100 is the safe queen size.
Fitted vs flat bedsheet
A flat sheet is a plain rectangle. It works on any mattress, it is easy to iron, and it gives the classic Indian bedroom look with a little drape on the sides.
A fitted sheet has elastic all around, so it grips the mattress like a cover. It stays wrinkle-free even with kids jumping on the bed. The only catch is depth: our queen fitted sheets are cut for 72×78 inch beds and fit mattresses up to 8 inches thick, and our king fitted sheets are 78×78 inches and fit up to 12 inches.

Glace cotton or pure cotton?
Both are good, they just feel different.
- Glace cotton has a smooth, slightly shiny finish and bright prints. It is easy to wash and dries fast. Most of our everyday queen sheets, like Kia and Toho, are glace cotton.
- Pure cotton feels softer and more breathable in summer. Our Jaipuri-print king sheets like Ambush and Clayara are pure cotton.
If your room gets hot, pick pure cotton. If you want strong colours that you can wash every week, glace cotton is the easier choice.
Mistakes we see every week
- Buying a king sheet for a double bed. It drags on the floor and looks untidy.
- Ordering a fitted sheet for a 10 inch mattress when it is made for 8 inches.
- Forgetting the pillow cover size. King pillows are usually 20×30, queen pillows 18×28.
- Washing a new dark print with whites the first time. Wash it separately once.
