How to measure your sofa and chairs for stretchable covers
Five minutes with a tape so the cover fits the first time, for a 3+1+1, an L-shape or dining chairs.

SweethomeeA stretchable cover can make a five-year-old sofa look new for a fraction of the price of re-upholstery. But stretch has a limit. If you measure first, the cover fits snugly. If you guess, it sags or will not go over the arms. Here is how we ask customers to measure.
Measuring a straight sofa (3-seater, 2-seater, 1-seater)
Measure the back width, from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other. This is the number that decides the size.
- 1-seater: usually 30 to 47 inches
- 2-seater: usually 57 to 72 inches
- 3-seater: usually 72 to 91 inches
A 3+1+1 set has one 3-seater and two 1-seater covers, which suits most Indian living rooms.
Measuring an L-shaped sofa
An L-shaped sofa cover comes in two pieces, one for each side of the L. Measure each side separately along the back, from the corner to the outer end. Also note which side the chaise or long seat is on, left or right, when you sit facing the room.

Measuring dining chairs
Dining chair covers stretch over the seat and backrest together. Check:
- Seat width: about 16 to 20 inches works for most covers
- Backrest height: from the seat to the top of the back
- Shape: a straight or slightly curved back fits best. Arm chairs and very round backs usually do not fit.
How to put on a stretchable cover
- Find the back seam and start from the top of the backrest.
- Pull the cover over the arms, then down over the seat.
- Push the extra fabric into the gap between the seat and the back. Many covers come with foam sticks for this.
- Pull the elastic bottom under the frame so it holds tight.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only the seat, not the full back width.
- Ordering a 3-seater cover for a large 2-seater "just to be safe". It will sag.
- Forgetting to tuck the fabric into the seat gap. That is what keeps it from sliding.

Do stretchable sofa covers fit L-shaped sofas?
Yes. L-shaped covers come in two pieces. Measure each side of the L separately and note which side the long seat is on.
Will chair covers fit my dining chairs?
They fit most armless dining chairs with a straight or slightly curved back. Very round backs and chairs with arms usually do not fit.
