How to wash bedsheets, mats and carpets so they last

Most fabric is ruined by the washing, not the use. Here's how we tell customers to care for each thing they buy from us.

A good bedsheet should look fresh for years, not fade after five washes. When a customer tells us a print faded fast, it is almost always hot water, too much detergent or hard sun. Here's the care routine for everything we sell, in one place. Bookmark it, or send it to whoever does the laundry at home.

Bedsheets: glace cotton and pure cotton

Glace cotton sheets are the easiest to look after. They take bright prints well, wrinkle less and dry quickly. Machine wash in cold or normal water and dry in the shade.

Pure cotton sheets breathe better in summer and get softer with every wash. Wash a new dark print alone the first time, because a little extra dye can come out. After that, wash with similar colours.

  • Use half the detergent the packet says. Extra soap stays in the fabric and makes it dull.
  • Turn printed sheets inside out before drying.
  • Never put bleach on a coloured sheet.

Not sure which fabric you have? Read pure cotton vs glace cotton.

Tip from our team: Change and wash sheets once a week, pillow covers twice. Pillow covers get the most oil from hair and face.

Diwan sets and cushion covers

Our chenille diwan set can be machine or hand washed. Use a gentle cycle, no bleach. Take the fillers out before washing the covers, and zip the covers closed so the zips don't catch on other clothes. Dry in the shade so the colours stay deep.

Comforters and pillows

  • Use a cover on the comforter if you can. Then you wash the cover often and the comforter only a few times a season.
  • When washing, hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle, and don't wring it hard. That pushes the filling to one side.
  • Dry it flat in the shade and shake it every hour so the fibre spreads evenly.
  • Before winter, give it a few hours of sun to air it out.

Pillows need washing rarely. Sun and fluffing keep them fresh. See the pillow size guide for more.

Door mats: shaggy, PVC and rubber

Shaggy mats (popcorn and glossy): shake them out every few days. Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, squeeze out the water, and dry flat or on a railing in the shade. Put the mat back only when it's fully dry, or it can smell.

PVC noodle and rubber mats are the easy ones. Lift, shake out the dirt underneath, wash with a hose or brush, and let them air dry. They dry quickly.

Tip from our team: Shake out a noodle mat before washing it. Most of the dirt it caught is lying under it, and you don't want to wash that into the loops.

Carpets and artificial grass

  • BCF carpet: vacuum or shake it weekly. For spills, blot first, then clean the spot with mild detergent and water. Let it dry completely before folding.
  • Shaggy carpet: same as shaggy mats. Vacuum often so dust doesn't settle deep into the pile.
  • Artificial grass: sweep off leaves, then hose it down. The drainage holes let the water out. Brush the blades up now and then to keep them standing.

Microfibre cleaning towels

Our 400 GSM microfibre towel is lint-free with two layers and is machine washable. Wash it without fabric softener. Softener clogs the fibres and the towel stops picking up dust and water. Keep separate towels for the car and the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop my bedsheet colour from fading?

Wash in cold water with less detergent, never use bleach, and dry it in the shade, inside out. Wash a new dark sheet alone the first time.

Can I machine wash a diwan set?

Yes. Our chenille diwan set can be machine or hand washed on a gentle cycle, without bleach. Take the fillers out first.

How do I wash a shaggy door mat?

Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, squeeze out the water (don't wring) and dry it flat in the shade until fully dry.

Why should I not use fabric softener on microfibre?

Softener coats the fibres, so the towel stops trapping dust and absorbing water.
