SweethomeeMost of us clean the car with an old T-shirt and the window glass with newspaper. Both leave lint, streaks or fine scratches. A thick microfiber cloth picks up dust and water instead of pushing it around. Ours is 400 GSM with two layers, lint-free, and safe on car paint, glass, mirrors and screens. Here's how we use it at home and at the shop.
What does 400 GSM mean?
GSM is grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. A higher number means a thicker, denser cloth that holds more water. Thin cloths are fine for wiping a table. For drying a whole car or bike after a wash, you want a thick one like 400 GSM so you're not wringing it out every two minutes.
Where to use it
One cloth, many jobs. Keep separate cloths for the car and the kitchen.
| Job | Dry or damp | How |
|---|---|---|
| Drying a car or bike after wash | Dry | Lay flat on the panel and pull gently. Don't rub in circles |
| Glass and mirrors | Slightly damp, then dry | Wipe with the damp side, finish with a dry fold |
| TV, laptop, phone screens | Dry | Light pressure only, screen switched off |
| Dashboard and interiors | Dry or damp | Damp for sticky spots, dry for dust |
| Kitchen counter and appliances | Damp | Rinse the cloth often |
| Dusting furniture | Dry | Fold in four, turn to a clean side as you go |
Washing and drying a car the scratch-free way
- Rinse off loose dust and mud with water first. Dry dust rubbed on paint is what causes fine scratches.
- Wash with car shampoo, top to bottom.
- Dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Keep a separate cloth for the wheels and lower doors, which carry the most grit.
- Finish the glass last with a fresh, dry fold.
How to wash the cloth
- Machine wash is fine. Wash microfiber on its own or with other microfiber, not with towels or cotton, which shed lint into it.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibres and the cloth stops absorbing.
- Dry in the shade.
- If a cloth has picked up grit or grease from the wheels, keep it for wheels only from then on.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 400 GSM microfiber cloth good for drying a car?
Yes. 400 GSM is thick and absorbent, so it soaks up water quickly. Lay it on the panel and pull gently instead of rubbing.
Will microfiber scratch car paint or glass?
Our cloth is lint-free and safe for car paint, glass, mirrors and electronics. Scratches usually come from grit, so rinse the car first and use a clean cloth.
Can I use the same cloth for the car and the kitchen?
Better not. Keep one for the car, one for the wheels and one for the house so dirt and grease don't move from one place to another.
Can microfiber cloths be machine washed?
Yes. They are machine washable and reusable. Skip fabric softener and wash them apart from cotton towels.
